i don't think that it is sealed. i think that it can survive indefinitely
in a limited manner, as long as we can find a server that carries it. now,
I suspect there will always be enthusiasts like Ray Banana who will
provide servers (Eternal September, in his case) for like minded folk.
When I said it's fate was sealed, I meant that it was doomed to lose its
popularity. It won't die until me or Enzo (or you) turn off the switch and
go home.
the old days of the wild, wild web appear to be gone.
All too true, sadly. The very day I first stumbled onto the web and into
acadia, I wondered how long it would be before the wonderful anarchy would
turn into mainstream normality. Pretty much the ten years since, but I
feel it's there.
I remember the 'naughty' feeling of ordering work tools and CDs from the
US to avoid paying VAT, but then the annoyance at being diverted to a UK
based site every time.
the meow wars didn't have anything to do with the death of the usernetz,
might have breathed a little life into it. for me, the meow wars were
about freedom of speech, and not tolerating elitist behavior. many
cultures have different insulting games, like "dozens", or "counting
coup". anyone who can't tell a usenet game of "counting coup" from real
life is a k00k. if you don't want to play it is easy enough to ignore,
or even filter. i guess that's why alt.usenet.kooks still appears to be
pretty lively.
Is a.u.k safe for a wandering fool such as I?
Back in those happy Elaine fueled days, I was constantly warned to stay
away from the Flonk, the Nose and Kooks. So I did, cos I thougt I'd get
eaten by monsters.
and i agree that it was the eternal september, then they wanted easier
forums, like facepuke and myspace. and no one to disagree with you, no
one to make you think, or express a different opinion, no unpleasant
realities. pablum.
Your about Faecebook. Even the version that we inhabit is devoid of any
real exctement. And considering who the members are (not that I have a
clue who most of them are, but I can guess *what* they are), that's quite
sad.
But then there is no-one to target. No-one to argue *with*. No 'innocent'
walking in off the street.
kachina is actually a childhood nickname, and the one i would answer to
if you called it out on the street. :)
I should have tried it when I was in Ohio. <lol>
